Chua on Top at LWPS IX

The LWPS IX main event final table The LWPS IX main event final table

Last weekend’s Leisure World Poker Series (LWPS) IX event saw Daniel Chua take down the SGD $250 main event and claim the SGD $5000 first prize. However, the latest leg in the popular series will not only be remembered for the hot action on the felt, it was also witness to the first LWPS Idol Contest and managed to attract a big name in the form of Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang.

The LWPS Idol Contest showed that there are a few poker players out there who don’t mind belting out a tune or two. As an added challenge, each performer in the contest had to sing in two different languages. While Bryan Huang impressed the crowd with Enrique Iglesias’ ‘Hero’ and Feyrine Wong shone with a great rendition of the Cranberries’ ‘Zombie’, it was Ricky Foo’s ‘One Night in Beijing’ that claimed the win to earn free entry into the following day’s Greed Event.

Back to the more serious action and when the 13 remaining main event players returned for play on Sunday, each had made the money so there was no bubble jitters holding back the short stack all ins. Bryan Huang was among the early casualties while enjoying some stress-free poker preparation before flying off to the APPT Melbourne.

On the final table, Chua steadily accumulated chips without ever seeming to put his entire stack at risk. His previous win at the LWPS was in a Rebuy event, but the veteran of the series had his eye on the main prize this time around. When down to three-handed, Chua’s Big Slick dispatched of 18-year-old Suriya Thevar, who had major kicker problems holding A-5. Chua’s top two pair sent Thevar to collect his SGD $2700 for third place.

At heads up, Chua entered with a dominating 5:1 chip advantage over Ye Renjie, who had done exceptionally well after scoring his seat in the tournament through a PokerStars Freeroll. But with so few chips in front of him Renjie looked down at Q-9 and thought it was good enough to push. Unfortunately for him, Chua made the call with K-9 and the board bricked out for Renjie, sending him home in second place for a SGD $3500 payday.
