Twenty-one year-old Aubin Cazals has snatched the World Series of Poker (WSOP) gold bracelet in the USD $5000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em Mixed-Max from 2010 WSOP Main Event third-place finisher Joseph Cheong. The unique format of the event saw players square off in nine-handed, six-handed and then heads up matches.
Cazals, who lives in Malta as an online pro, had to endure a marathon heads up semi-final before he even got to the duel with Cheong. Facing off against Warwick Mirzikinian, the match took a mind-numbing 9 hours and 25 minutes – the most of any heads up match in history but one that won’t count in the record books because it wasn’t a final heads up match.
The length of the semi forced the two remaining players and organisers to postpone the final to an unscheduled fifth day. When it did at last play out, it went for a more manageable five hours before Cheong six-bet shoved with Pocket Fours and careened straight into the Pocket Kings of Cazals. Cheong took home USD $296,956 for runner-up as Cazals pocketed USD $480,564 and the bracelet for first place.
