Ever since Vanessa Selbst won her World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet in 2008, there has not been a female winner in a WSOP event that’s open to both genders. The streak ran for 249 male winners in a row but, yesterday, Allyn Jaffrey-Shulman ensured there would be no 250th.
Jaffrey-Shulman, who is a well-known attorney and writer with Card Player Magazine, took out the WSOP USD $1,000 Seniors World Championship from a massive field of 4,128 players to collect USD $603,713 in prize money. Her victory was even more notable as it came at the expense of runner-up Dennis Phillips, who was the crowd favourite 2008 WSOP November Niner.
Perhaps even more amazing is the fact that her husband, Barry Shulman (CEO of Card Player Magazine and 2009 WSOPE Main Event winner) and step-son Jeff Shulman (2009 WSOP November Niner) also made final tables in the WSOP this week – making it a first in WSOP history that three family members have made a final table the same year.
After her win, Jaffrey-Shulman commented, “I’m happy for myself, but I’m happy for all women that I won this, showing that any woman can win a poker tournament. I’d like to see more of them out there playing, feeling comfortable with going at it with the boys and winning.”
