It has been a long-time coming but Facebook has now launched its first real-money gambling app. The move came on Tuesday with the release of Bingo & Slots Friendzy in the UK. The app allows UK players aged over 18 years old to play cash games and win jackpots with their friends for the first time on a social network platform.
“People love playing new types of games with their friends on Facebook and real money gaming is a popular leisure activity in the UK,” said Julien Codorniou, Head of EMEA Gaming Partnerships at Facebook Europe. “We’re delighted to be working with Gamesys to enable them to offer their games on Facebook so that people can enjoy playing more games with their friends.”
The app will feature a number of controls to verify users are over 18 years old and will only be visible to users in the UK. Currently a bingo app, its real-money slot machine games will reportedly be rolled out in the next few weeks.
Whether this means real-money poker will soon follow on Facebook is anyone’s guess. Some believe that, should it eventuate, real-money poker on Facebook would kick-start a new worldwide boom in poker. Zynga – Facebook’s largest gaming partner and creator of Zynga Poker – has already been reported as likely moving into real-money gaming by early 2013.
